The Corporate & Public Affairs Program

The Corporate & Public Affairs Program offers an array of lectures, symposia, and luncheons covering economic and political issues of concern to Spain, Latin America and the United States.

Queen Sofía Spanish Institute would like to thank all of the speakers and the many individuals who have generously participated in our programs by sharing their knowledge, insights and time.  Among the notable speakers the Institute has had over the last few years are H.E. José María Aznar, Dr. Jordi Canals, Hon. Jordi Pujol, Hon. Miquel Roca I Junyent and Amb. Javier Rupérez .

The Corporate & Public Affairs Program has been made possible by the generosity of foundations, corporations, and individual sponsors, and with the advisement of the Cultural and Public Affairs Committee.

The Institute extends its gratitude in particular to the Corporate Members for their support; the Laboratorios Dr. Esteve for their generous underwriting of the Ramón y Cajal Medical Lecture Series; the friends and family of Dr. Woods for their ongoing sponsorship of The Daniel E. Woods Lectures; and the Tinker Foundation for its continued generosity.

In addition, the Institute would also like to acknowledge the organizations that have collaborated through the years in a variety of programs, especially the Embassy of Spain in Washington D.C., the Consulate General of Spain in New York, the Tourist Office of Spain, the Commercial Office of Spain, the Spain-U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the various Autonomous Regional Governments of Spain.

The Ramón y Cajal Medical Lectures

Queen Sofía Spanish Institute 1998 – 2006

This lecture series was initiated in 1999 by Fernando Aleu, Ph.D. in medicine, for the purpose of presenting scientific and medical topics of interest.  It was named for Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852 – 1934), a Spanish histologist, physician and 1906 Nobel laureate, who is considered to be one of the founders of modern neuroscience. Renowned Spanish and American medical specialists would speak on their area of expertise in order to keep Queen Sofía Spanish Institute members and the public at large informed of the latest developments in medical research.

The lecture series was sponsored by Laboratorios Dr. Esteve of Barcelona, a leading pharmaceutical corporation in Spain. Its inauguration took place in New York in 1998 as a round table discussion held at Queen Sofía Spanish Institute in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Sofía. In 2006, the series came to a close at a ceremony held at the Real Academia de Medicina in Barcelona at which Her Majesty the Queen also presided. At this closing act, each participant presented a summary of the progress that medicine has made in their respective fields over the course of last six years since they gave their first conference about their subjects.
